Hip hop's album culture deepened in 1993, while grunge, shoegaze and alternative rock moved in several directions at once. Key releases from 1993 include Siamese Dream by The Smashing Pumpkins, Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) by Wu-Tang Clan, Souvlaki by Slowdive and Midnight Marauders by A Tribe Called Quest.
Wu-Tang Clan and A Tribe Called Quest offered very different models for group rap, Slowdive pushed guitar sound towards atmosphere, and the Smashing Pumpkins combined dense production with melodic rock songs.
