Melvins – Houdini

Melvins' Houdini arrived in 1993 as the band's fifth album and first major-label release, catching a moment when heavy American rock was opening up beyond neat genre lines. What makes it last is how clearly it shows the group's range: grunge abrasion, hard-rock punch and the slower, denser weight that would help define sludge metal all sit together without sounding tidied up for wider appeal.

It was also Melvins' biggest commercial success, but the appeal is musical rather than historical footnote. Buzz Osborne's guitar tone stays thick and punishing, while Dale Crover's drumming gives the record much of its movement, shifting from blunt-force grooves to more off-centre detail. That balance makes Houdini one of the more approachable entries in the catalogue without sanding away the band's oddness.

Specific moments still stand out. The Kiss cover “Going Blind” shows how comfortably Melvins could bend a known song to their own weight and mood, while “Honey Bucket” remains one of the album's most direct bursts of attack. Kurt Cobain also contributed to “Sky Pup,” a small but notable link between Melvins and the wider early-'90s Northwest scene. For many listeners, this is the record that opens the door: a heavy, warped, surprisingly flexible album that explains why Melvins mattered then and still reward digging into now.

Reviews

• Houdini is about as close as one gets to a representative Melvins album, and it vividly captures the band's unreconstructed power, vision, and musical strangeness. - AllMusic.com
