How to Sell Your Vinyl Record Collection

Selling a vinyl collection can feel like a big job, especially if you’ve been buying records for years. Here’s a simple guide to your options and how we approach buying collections at Dutch Vinyl.

Your main options

  1. Sell records individually online
Platforms like Discogs and eBay let you set prices and reach buyers worldwide, but it takes time to photograph, grade, list, pack and ship each record.
  2. Sell directly to other collectors
You might be able to sell to friends, local collectors or at record fairs, but this can also be slow and requires a lot of effort.
  3. Sell your collection to a record store
This is usually the quickest and simplest option. You sell a large part (or all) of the collection in one go, instead of piece by piece.

About app-based valuations

We’re currently seeing more people using apps that scan records and generate an estimated collection value (e.g. VinylSnap and similar tools). These apps are great for cataloguing a collection, but they often use the highest online asking price for each title and assume all records are near-mint and individually saleable.

This can create unrealistic expectations, especially for common titles, worn records, older reissues, and genres with limited demand. In practice, many records sell for much less than the highest advertised price – and some don’t sell at all.

If you prefer a realistic picture of what a collection can be sold for, we’re happy to provide one based on real sales, real demand, and real condition.

Why app valuations can differ from real-world pricing

  • Condition matters – Light wear, scratches or splits reduce value.
  • Pressing matters – Not all pressings are equal; originals and audiophile labels can differ by 10x.
  • Demand matters – Some titles are common and slow-moving even if they’re priced high online.
  • Time matters – Selling individually takes time, shipping, fees and returns.
  • Collections sell differently – When selling a collection, the buyer takes the good with the hard-to-sell.

How we buy collections

At Dutch Vinyl, we aim to make selling straightforward:

  • We buy collections in and around Melbourne and Brisbane
  • For large, rare or valuable collections, we travel further across Victoria, Queensland and Australia
  • We assess condition, pressing, demand and rarity
  • We offer a fair price based on what we can realistically resell
  • We pay quickly and handle all the heavy lifting

How to prepare your collection

  • Store records upright in boxes or on shelves (not flat)
  • Keep records in a dry, clean environment
  • If possible, group similar genres together
  • Make a rough count of how many LPs, 12"s and 7"s you have

What to tell us when you get in touch

When you contact us, it helps if you can include:

  • Approximate number of records
  • Main genres and a few key artists
  • Your location
  • Photos or a list (Discogs, spreadsheet) if you have one

From there, we’ll let you know whether it’s best to bring the records in, drop them off, or arrange a visit for larger or more valuable collections.
