Kind of Blue used modal frameworks to give Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Cannonball Adderley, Bill Evans and the rest of the band more room to shape each performance. So What, Freddie Freeloader and Blue in Green remain widely recognised, but the album's lasting strength is how calm and open the sessions still sound.

Few years show jazz changing so clearly. Kind of Blue simplified harmony, Time Out challenged standard metre, Mingus Ah Um revisited jazz history, and Chega de Saudade helped establish bossa nova.
