Charles Mingus was an American jazz double bassist, composer, bandleader and occasional pianist. He was a major figure in the jazz world and is widely considered one of the most important jazz musicians of the 20th century. Mingus is known for his musical innovation, improvisational skill and distinctive compositions.

Mingusโ€™s early career saw him working with some of the most prominent jazz musicians of the time, such as Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis, and Charlie Parker. His most famous albums include The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady (1963), Mingus Ah Um (1959), and Mingus Dynasty (1959). He also recorded extensively with his bands, the Jazz Workshop and the Jazz Composers Workshop.

Some of Mingusโ€™s most well-known songs include โ€œGoodbye Pork Pie Hatโ€, โ€œFables of Faubusโ€, and โ€œHaitian Fight Songโ€.

An interesting fact about Charles Mingus is that he wrote an autobiography in 1959, entitled โ€œBeneath the Underdogโ€. The book was later adapted into an opera in 1993, entitled โ€œThe Mingus Projectโ€.
