Dutch Vinyl's Album of the Year

Ryo Fukui - Scenery

Scenery was Ryo Fukui's debut album, recorded as a piano trio with Satoshi Denpo and Yoshinori Fukui. Its versions of It Could Happen to You, Early Summer and Autumn Leaves are direct, melodic and easy to enter. The record later found a large international audience, making it an important route into Japanese jazz.

Why 1976 Matters

The contrast is the point: the Ramones reduced rock to short, fast songs, David Bowie moved through soul and electronic ideas, the Eagles perfected studio rock and Ryo Fukui recorded a piano-trio album later discovered by a global audience.
