Albums First Released in 1975

Arena rock grew larger in 1975, but funk, ambient music and jazz also produced records with very different ideas about space and rhythm. Key releases from 1975 include Wish You Were Here by Pink Floyd, Physical Graffiti by Led Zeppelin, The Köln Concert by Keith Jarrett and Mothership Connection by Parliament.

The year rewards broad browsing. Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin worked at large scale, Parliament made funk theatrical, Keith Jarrett turned solo improvisation into a major seller, and Brian Eno developed quieter forms of studio music.

Our Pick of the Year: Wish You Were Here by Pink Floyd

Wish You Were Here is built around absence: former bandmate Syd Barrett, the pressures of the music business and the distance created by success. Shine On You Crazy Diamond frames the album, while Welcome to the Machine, Have a Cigar and the title track keep the themes direct. The record balances large studio production with a personal centre.
