Nasty Gal is Betty Davis’s fiercest and most fully realised album, a raw blast of funk-rock that turned swagger, sexuality and confrontation into a singular artistic voice. Released in 1975, it followed her self-titled breakthrough and sharpened the attack with harder grooves, sharper guitar lines and Davis’s unmistakably commanding vocal presence. Moving between blues rock, soul-jazz and funk, the album built her reputation as a fearless performer whose work challenged both rock and R&B conventions. Though overlooked on release, Nasty Gal has since become a cult landmark and a key touchstone for later generations drawn to Davis’s bold independence and uncompromising style.
