About this album
Bankrupt shows Dr. Hook turning their laid-back country-rock into sharper pop satire without losing their easy charm. Released in 1975, the album blends humour, funk touches and a stronger commercial polish, with “Only Sixteen” emerging as its best-known song and a major hit for the band. By this stage Dr. Hook had developed a gift for mixing sly social comedy with singalong melodies, and Bankrupt leans into that balance with songs that poke fun at ambition, money and failed glamour. It remains one of the group’s most recognisable mid-70s albums and a snapshot of their crossover appeal.
