On The Track is a finely judged statement from Leon Redbone, sharpening his blend of vintage blues, jazz and vaudeville into something unmistakably his own. Issued in 1975, the album extends the intimate, low-key style that made Redbone a cult figure, with dry humour, sepia-toned ambience and a remarkable feel for pre-war material. His version of standards such as Ain’t Misbehavin’ and Lazybones shows how he could make old songs feel freshly observed rather than merely nostalgic. Widely admired by critics, the record helped establish Redbone as one of the most idiosyncratic interpreters of American popular song.
