How Dare You! is 10cc at their most inventive, sharpening the group’s wit, melody and studio trickery into a richly detailed pop-rock album. Released in 1976, it followed the British quartet’s run of ambitious hitmaking and showed how far they could push mainstream songwriting without losing the hooks. Built around the contrasting strengths of Eric Stewart, Graham Gouldman, Kevin Godley and Lol Creme, the record balances sly humour with polished craftsmanship, from the tense title track to the lingering appeal of I’m Mandy Fly Me and the playful Art for Arts Sake. Its blend of art rock, pop and progressive ideas helped confirm 10cc as one of the era’s most original singles bands turned album artists.
