Albums First Released in 1968

The optimism of 1967 gave way to heavier rock, country influence and more inward songwriting in 1968. Among the defining albums released in 1968 were The Beatles by The Beatles, At Folsom Prison by Johnny Cash, Astral Weeks by Van Morrison and Beggars Banquet by The Rolling Stones.

1968 did not move in one direction. Rock grew heavier, country and roots music returned to prominence, and artists such as Van Morrison and Leonard Cohen favoured personal, literary songwriting.

Our Pick of the Year: The Beatles by The Beatles

The Beatles, commonly called the White Album, spread across four sides and refused a single style. Back in the U.S.S.R., While My Guitar Gently Weeps, Blackbird and Helter Skelter sit beside folk sketches, studio experiments and music-hall songs. Its unevenness is part of the appeal: it documents four writers pulling in different directions while still working as one band.
