    About this album

    Weather Report’s self-titled debut is a landmark early jazz fusion album, bringing together Joe Zawinul, Wayne Shorter and Miroslav Vitouš in a group that pointed jazz towards new textures and freedoms. Released in 1971, it introduced a band name that would soon become synonymous with adventurous electric jazz, while still feeling closer to open-ended improvisation than later crossover polish. Built around atmospheric interplay and exploratory pieces such as Milky Way and Tears, the album showed how composition, colour and spontaneity could coexist in a fresh post-bop framework. It remains an important statement from one of fusion’s most influential groups.
