Issued in 1973, it marked a move away from their freer, more collective beginnings towards a more rhythmic, electric sound that would help define the band’s mid-1970s reputation. Built around extended improvisation and muscular grooves, the set includes the landmark opener ‘Boogie Woogie Waltz’ and the spare, nocturnal ‘125th Street Congress’. With Joe Zawinul and Wayne Shorter at the creative core, the record captures Weather Report as one of the most adventurous forces in contemporary jazz.
