The American jazz-fusion band Weather Report was founded in 1970 by keyboardist Joe Zawinul, saxophonist Wayne Shorter, and bassist Miroslav Vitous. They began as a free-improvising jazz group with avant-garde and experimental electronic tendencies. Driven by Zawinul’s obsession with groove, the band evolved into a funky, edgy sound and incorporated R&B elements.
“Sweetnighter” was the first album on which this new direction became apparent. It was their third studio album, originally released in 1973. The album’s final track, “Non-Stop Home,” offered a glimpse of the band’s evolving signature sound.
