About this album
Rum Sodomy & The Lash is The Pogues’ fierce breakthrough, a record that turned Celtic folk-punk into a genuinely distinctive British sound. Produced by Elvis Costello and released in 1985, it sharpened the band’s blend of rowdy momentum, literate humour and bruised melancholy, with songs such as A Pair Of Brown Eyes, Sally MacLennane and Dirty Old Town showing how sharply they could move between pub heat and hard-earned pathos. More disciplined than their debut, the album helped establish The Pogues as one of the most original and influential bands of the decade, carrying their songs well beyond punk’s usual borders.
