The Pogues

The Pogues are a British-Irish punk band that formed in 1982. The band is best known for their blend of Irish traditional music with punk rock and their electric live performances.

The Pogues released their debut album Red Roses for Me in 1984. The album featured their hit single “A Pair of Brown Eyes” and is considered one of the defining albums of the English punk scene. The band followed up this success with their breakthrough album Rum, Sodomy & the Lash in 1985. The album featured the single “Dirty Old Town” and is considered one of the best albums of the 1980s.

The Pogues went on to release a number of other albums such as If I Should Fall From Grace With God (1988), Hell’s Ditch (1990) and Pogue Mahone (1996). Other standout songs include “Fairytale of New York” (1987), “The Irish Rover” (1988) and “Streams of Whiskey” (1990).

An interesting fact about The Pogues is that they have a strong connection to the punk band The Clash. Members of The Pogues were good friends with The Clash and even opened for them on their 1981 tour. The Pogues also covered The Clash’s song “Straight to Hell” on their 1988 album If I Should Fall From Grace With God.
