Freak Out! is a landmark debut that helped open rock to satire, collage and avant-garde experimentation. Credited to The Mothers, Frank Zappa’s first major statement arrived in 1966 and fused rhythm and blues, doo-wop, musique concrète and savage parody into a restless double album. Its sharp social commentary, abrupt style shifts and sheer ambition made it one of the earliest rock records structured like an art work rather than a pop collection. Widely regarded as a foundation stone for experimental rock, it established Zappa’s reputation as one of the decade’s most uncompromising and inventive figures.
