The Icicle Works is a striking debut that helped define the UK indie-rock sound of the mid-1980s. Released in 1984, the album balances chiming guitars, urgent rhythms and Iain McNabb’s expressive vocals with a melodic confidence that set the band apart from many post-punk peers. Love Is a Wonderful Colour became their best-known song, while Birds Fly (Whisper to a Scream) gave the record wider international reach.
