    Faith is a bleak, compelling high point in The Cure’s early evolution, tightening their post-punk sound into something colder, sadder and more self-contained. Released in 1981, it followed Seventeen Seconds and pushed the band further towards the austere mood and haunted textures that would help define gothic rock. Robert Smith’s stark guitar lines and fragile vocal delivery give songs such as Primary, All Cats Are Grey and The Drowning Man their uneasy emotional pull, while the title track closes the record in near-total desolation. Widely regarded as one of the key documents of The Cure’s dark early period, it captures a band refining atmosphere into statement.
