Since I Left You is The Avalanches’ breakthrough masterpiece, a dazzling sample-based collage that turned cut-and-paste production into a euphoric pop statement. Released in 2000, the Australian group’s debut blends electronic, hip hop, house and downtempo influences into a seamless sequence of hooks, grooves and sonic fragments, with the title track and ‘Frontier Psychiatrist’ becoming defining songs of the era. Built from thousands of samples and edited into a near-continuous flow, the album helped set a new benchmark for inventive crate-digging and leftfield production. Its critical acclaim has kept it widely regarded as one of the most imaginative debut albums of its time.
