The Alan Parsons Project's Pyramid arrived in May 1978 as the group's third studio album, turning the era's fascination with Egyptian mystique and so-called pyramid power into a sleek prog-pop concept record. Recorded at Abbey Road, it also captures what Alan Parsons and Eric Woolfson did especially well: pairing studio precision with big melodic hooks. The album became a substantial international success, selling more than two million copies and earning gold and platinum certifications in several countries, while also landing a 1979 Grammy nomination for Best Engineered Recording, Non-Classical.

What makes Pyramid stand out is the balance between atmosphere and songcraft. Instrumental passages like "Voyager" and "Hyper-Gamma-Spaces" sit alongside more direct vocal tracks, giving the record a shifting, cinematic feel rather than a single-singer identity. Parsons used a rotating cast of lead vocalists here, including John Miles, Colin Blunstone, Lenny Zakatek, David Paton, Jack Harris and Dean Ford, with key contributions from guitarist Ian Bairnson, drummer Stuart Elliott and arranger Andrew Powell.

That mix of accessible melodies, layered keyboards, orchestral colour and carefully paced crescendos makes Pyramid an appealing entry point if you like your progressive rock polished rather than sprawling. This edition also makes sense as a vinyl return: it uses a half-speed remaster cut by Miles Showell at Abbey Road, bringing fresh focus to one of the Project's most commercially successful and sonically ambitious albums.
