About this album
On The Road finds Stéphane Grappelli and the Diz Disley Trio in relaxed but spirited form, pairing Grappelli’s shimmering violin with the trio’s fluent swing. Issued in 1975, the album draws on jazz standards and Gypsy jazz touches, showing why Grappelli remained one of the genre’s most graceful improvisers long after the original Hot Club era. The programme moves easily from ballads to barnstorming swingers, with performances of pieces such as ‘Misty’, ‘Nuages’ and a Gershwin medley underlining both his melodic poise and rhythmic ease. It is a fine snapshot of an enduring partnership rooted in wit, warmth and effortless musicianship.
