About this album
Out Of Time is the album that turned R.E.M. from college-rock favourites into global stars. Released in 1991, it broadens their jangly alternative rock with mandolin-led textures, acoustic intimacy and sharper pop instincts, while still sounding unmistakably like the band that emerged from Athens, Georgia. The presence of Losing My Religion and Shiny Happy People gave the record its commercial reach, but songs such as Country Feedback and Near Wild Heaven show a group expanding its emotional and stylistic range. The album became one of R.E.M.’s biggest sellers and a defining alternative-rock statement of the early 1990s.
