About this album
Lifes Rich Pageant is the album where R.E.M.’s collegiate jangle rock became bigger, sharper and more outward-looking. Produced by Don Gehman and released in 1986, it pushed the band’s sound into a tougher, clearer register without losing the chiming guitars and cryptic pull that defined their early work. Songs such as Fall On Me, Begin the Begin and Cuyahoga helped broaden their audience, while the record’s socially aware lyrics gave the group a more direct political voice. Widely regarded as one of their key 1980s releases, it helped set the stage for the mainstream success that followed.
