About this album
Procol Harum’s self-titled debut is a landmark of British psych-pop, best known for the worldwide breakthrough A Whiter Shade of Pale. Released in 1967, it paired Gary Brooker’s soulful vocals and Matthew Fisher’s classically inflected organ with Robin Trower’s guitar and Keith Reid’s enigmatic lyrics, creating a sound that felt both formal and unruly. The album’s blend of baroque pop, blues and psychedelic invention helped define the late-1960s UK scene, while its most famous single became one of the era’s most enduring and debated hits. This debut established the band’s distinctive, literate style from the outset.
