The Boatman's Call is a stark, deeply affecting turning point in Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds' catalogue. Released in 1997, it trades the band's earlier menace for piano-led confession, spare arrangements and raw emotional candour, with Cave's writing at its most direct and vulnerable. Songs such as Into My Arms, Brompton Oratory and (Are You) The One That I've Been Waiting For? became some of his most celebrated works, helped by the album's intimate production and sombre beauty. Widely regarded as one of the band's key records, it sharpened Cave's reputation as one of rock's great lyricists.
