Released in 1986, it refashions material by artists ranging from Johnny Cash and Hank Williams to Jimi Hendrix, Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen, stripping each song back to its raw emotional core. Rather than sounding like a novelty detour, the record deepens the band’s reputation for menace, wit and control, showing how Cave could inhabit other writers’ material as if it were his own. It became an important early album in the Bad Seeds catalogue and a vivid example of their unclassifiable mix of blues, gospel and post-punk tension.
