About this album
Re·ac·tor is one of Neil Young & Crazy Horse’s roughest and most confrontational albums, trading polish for volume, distortion and immediacy. Released in 1981, it arrived after the new wave detour of Trans and returned Young to a harder-edged band sound built on ragged guitar interplay and urgent, sometimes deliberately abrasive performances. The record mixes barnstorming rock with slyly comic and road-worn material such as Opera Star and Southern Pacific, showing Young pushing Crazy Horse into lean, noisy territory rather than easy nostalgia. Long seen as a divisive but important part of his early-1980s run, it became a key document of his refusal to stand still.
