Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere is the breakthrough album that established Neil Young & Crazy Horse as one of rock’s most distinctive bands. Released in 1969, it sharpened Young’s gift for wiry melody and plainspoken writing into a tougher, more improvisational sound, with Crazy Horse giving the songs their loose but forceful edge. The record set the template for his long-form guitar jams and included enduring classics such as Cinnamon Girl, Down by the River and Cowgirl in the Sand. Blending folk-rock intimacy with country-rock muscle, it became a key touchstone for the tougher end of the singer-songwriter era and one of Young’s most important early statements.
