    Ride the Lightning is the album where Metallica widened thrash metal’s vocabulary without softening its bite. Released in 1984, it built on the speed and aggression of their debut while adding greater songcraft, dynamic range and a darker sense of drama. The record moves from the ferocious opening blast of Fight Fire With Fire to the eerie sweep of For Whom the Bell Tolls, the title track’s driving momentum and the sprawling instrumental The Call of Ktulu. Along with Fade to Black, one of the band’s most enduring early songs, it helped establish Metallica as leaders of the genre and a major force in heavy metal.
