...And Justice for All is Metallica at their most ambitious and uncompromising, turning thrash metal into a longer, more complex and more politically charged form. Released in 1988, the album followed Master of Puppets and sharpened the band’s precision with jagged song structures, rapid-fire riffing and lyrics aimed at war, corruption and institutional failure. ‘One’ became one of Metallica’s defining songs, while the title track and ‘Blackened’ show how far the group pushed heaviness without sacrificing musicianship. Produced by Flemming Rasmussen with the band, the record remains a cornerstone of late-80s metal and one of Metallica’s most influential releases.
