MC5 – Back In The USA (Atlantic 75 Series, Rocktober, Clear Vinyl)

MC5's Back in the USA arrived in 1970 as the Detroit band's second album, and it still sounds like a deliberate jolt after Kick Out the Jams. Produced by Jon Landau, it trades some of the debut's sheer live sprawl for a leaner, sharper attack that later listeners would hear as a bridge toward punk and power pop. Just as importantly, the record frames that forward rush with rock'n'roll history, opening with Little Richard's "Tutti Frutti" and closing with Chuck Berry's "Back in the U.S.A.".

What makes the album so satisfying is the way MC5 compress big ideas into short, hard-moving songs. Adolescence runs through the record, from the rebellious rush of "Teenage Lust" and "High School" to the more bitter social critique of "The American Ruse," where the band's politics remain impossible to miss. Then there is "Let Me Try," a doo wop-shaped ballad that reveals a surprisingly tender side without breaking the album's tension.

That contrast is part of the appeal. Back in the USA salutes the roots of American rock while pushing them into something tougher, tighter and more confrontational. If Kick Out the Jams made MC5 impossible to ignore, this is the record that shows how clearly they could shape their noise into songs.
