About this album

Ryan's Daughter is one of Maurice Jarre’s most lyrical and atmospheric soundtracks, pairing sweeping orchestral writing with Irish folk-inflected colour. Written for David Lean’s 1970 film set in coastal Ireland, the score balances romantic grandeur, pastoral tenderness and tension, with themes that give the drama a distinctly emotional centre. Jarre, already established for large-scale screen music, uses memorable melodic motifs and varied orchestration to support the film’s sweeping visuals and tragic tone. The soundtrack stands as a fine example of his ability to turn period setting into vivid musical storytelling, and remains closely associated with one of Lean’s most lavish late productions.
