Law Of Nature is a sharp, adventurous statement from Laughing Clowns, the Sydney band fronted by Ed Kuepper after The Saints. Released in 1984, it pushed beyond straightforward post-punk into brass-laced art rock, mixing jagged guitar work, saxophone textures and tense, wayward songwriting. The album’s restless mood and literary bite helped mark Laughing Clowns out as one of Australia’s most distinctive underground groups of the era. With its balance of abrasion, melody and improvisation, Law Of Nature remains a striking example of how far Australian alternative rock could stretch beyond its punk roots.
