About this album
The James Brown Show (Live At The Apollo) is a ferocious live landmark that turned James Brown into a national force. Recorded at Harlem’s Apollo Theater and issued in 1963, it captures his hard-driving band, ruthless pacing and crowd control at the moment when rhythm and blues was hardening into soul. Songs such as “Please, Please, Please” and “Lost Someone” become dramatic set pieces, stretched and shaped by Brown’s raw vocal command and the audience’s explosive response. Often regarded as one of the great live soul albums, it helped establish the modern model of the concert record as a test of charisma, discipline and sheer stage power.
