About this album
A striking late-1960s crossover, Selections From 2001: A Space Odyssey / Suite From Aniara joins orchestral gravitas with electronic modernism. Issued in 1968, the release draws on music associated with Stanley Kubrick’s landmark film, including Also sprach Zarathustra and The Blue Danube, and places it alongside Werner Janssen’s suite from Harry Martinson’s space poem Aniara. With performances by Eugene Ormandy and The Philadelphia Orchestra, Leonard Bernstein and the New York Philharmonic, and Wiener Volksopernorchester, it captures the period when classical repertory, film culture and electronic sound were moving into closer contact.
