Eugene Ormandy (1899–1985) was a Hungarian-born American conductor and violinist who was the long-time director of the Philadelphia Orchestra. Ormandy conducted over 5000 concerts during his 44-year tenure with the orchestra, leading the ensemble to become one of the world’s greatest symphonic orchestras.

Ormandy is best known for his performances of works by the great Romantic composers, such as Tchaikovsky, Brahms, and Mahler. His standout albums include Brahms: Symphony No. 1 & 4, Tchaikovsky: Symphony No. 4 & 5, and Beethoven: Symphony No. 3 & 8. His standout songs include “The Blue Danube”, “An American in Paris”, and “Rhapsody in Blue”.

An interesting fact about Ormandy is that he was the first American conductor to conduct at the Soviet Union’s Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow in 1959.
