Eels' Cookie Happened is the 16th studio album from Mark Oliver Everett's long-running project, arriving three decades into a catalogue that began with 1996's Beautiful Freak. The title comes from E's wry, unexpectedly moving spin on a Cookie Monster line: joy, hardship and achievement may all fade, but that does not make the experience any less beautiful while it lasts. That mix of existential reflection and dry humour has always suited Eels, and it gives this record a clear emotional frame from the start.
The songs are described as another strong example of what E does best: intimate, narrator-led writing built from simple but memorable motifs, with sparse arrangements that keep the focus on the voice and the feeling. Acoustic guitars, subtle electronic details and occasional string swells add shape without crowding the material, while the mood moves easily between irony, melancholy and hard-won warmth. If you came to 2024's EELS Time! for its balance of reflection and optimism, this follows naturally from there.
Cookie Happened also fits neatly into the wider Eels story. Everett has kept the project deliberately changeable from album to album, yet the band's core strengths remain easy to recognise: melodic clarity, emotional candour, and a way of making life's mess feel oddly companionable. "Cap in Hand" is the advance track named in the source material, and it points toward an album that sounds thoughtful rather than heavy-handed about its themes.
