David Sylvian – Gone To Earth (2xLP, Coloured Vinyl)

David Sylvian's Gone to Earth arrived in September 1986 as a strikingly expansive point in his post-Japan career: a double album that split its attention between seven vocal songs and a full LP of ambient instrumentals. Recorded in part at The Manor in Oxfordshire with producer Steve Nye, it reached No. 24 on the UK album chart and shows Sylvian pushing beyond art-pop into something more meditative, textural, and inward-looking.

What makes the record so absorbing is the way those two sides of Sylvian's writing sit together without blurring into one mood. The vocal material includes some of his most shadowed and melodic songs, while the instrumental half opens out into long-form, atmospheric pieces that feel exploratory rather than decorative. Themes of personal reflection sit alongside interests in Gnosticism and alchemy, giving the album a distinctly searching character.

The cast helps explain the album's unusual range. Robert Fripp and Bill Nelson both contribute guitar, with further input from Steve Jansen and Kenny Wheeler, and the result is a record that moves easily between experimental rock, ambient drift, and carefully sculpted songcraft. This remastered edition brings back one of Sylvian's most ambitious solo releases in its full two-LP form.
