Brilliant Trees is the debut solo album by David Sylvian, released in 1984 after the breakup of his band Japan. Bringing together collaborators like Ryuichi Sakamoto, Jon Hassell, Holger Czukay and Mark Isham, Sylvian crafted a sound that blends art-pop song structures with ambient textures and jazz-tinged improvisation. Tracks such as Pulling Punches, The Ink in the Well and Red Guitar balance melodic immediacy with experimental leanings, while the title track stretches into expansive, atmospheric territory.
The record captures Sylvian at a point of transformation, moving away from the stylised new wave of Japan and into a more contemplative, nuanced space. With its mix of elegant arrangements, layered instrumentation and Sylvian’s expressive vocals, Brilliant Trees stands as a landmark in his career and a defining statement of sophisticated 1980s art-pop.
Reviews
“By the time Sylvian released his solo debut Brilliant Trees in 1984… the album remains his most immediate work, featuring some of his most memorable melodies (‘Red Guitar,’ ‘The Ink in the Well’) and daring explorations like the nearly nine-minute title track.” — Pitchfork
“Released in the summer of 1984, Brilliant Trees came about as the logical conclusion to Japan in general … Pulling Punches … had all the elements that had made Japan a success … With the introspective concept of ‘Ghosts’ … Sylvian’s doubts … seem justified.” — Sputnikmusic
“Though often graceful and serene in design, it never gets too introspective for its own good … the inclusion of the sublime pop of ‘Red Guitar’ ensured it could gain traction on the charts on its initial release.” — uDiscover Music
