About this album

Backstreet is a polished, accessible showcase for David Sanborn’s expressive alto saxophone and the smooth jazz sound that made him one of the style’s defining crossover figures. Released in 1983, the album blends taut funk, soulful melodies and understated pop sensibility, with Sanborn’s tone carrying the music even at its most streamlined. By this point he had already built a reputation as a sought-after session player and solo artist, and Backstreet helped cement that profile with its radio-friendly approach and clean, contemporary production. It stands as a strong example of early-’80s jazz aimed beyond the traditional jazz audience.
