The Black Saint And The Sinner Lady is one of Charles Mingus’s most celebrated works, a dramatic 1963 suite that pushed jazz orchestration into bold new territory. Recorded with a large ensemble and arranged like a continuous dance suite, it blends fiery ensemble writing, shifting textures and extended improvisation into a highly personal statement. Mingus’s mix of blues feeling, modern composition and avant-garde risk made the album a landmark of adventurous jazz and a key example of his uncompromising imagination. Its enduring reputation has placed it among the defining recordings of 1960s jazz.
