East Coasting is a taut, lyrical Charles Mingus album that balances cool jazz poise with the bite and freedom of bop. Recorded in 1957, it finds Mingus leading a finely tuned small group through music that is both tightly structured and restless, with his compositional voice already unmistakable: elegant melodies, shifting textures and strong rhythmic undercurrents. The title piece and the reflective “Memories Of You” sit alongside the bluesy drive of “Fifty-First Street Blues”, showing how Mingus could move from understatement to fire without losing form. It is a key document from his formative late-1950s period.
