  • Cannonball Adderley's Somethin' Else is the only Blue Note album released under his name, recorded in March 1958 while he was playing in Miles Davis' band. That context matters: Davis turns up here as a sideman in name, but his presence is felt throughout, right down to the famously audible studio aside at the end of “One for Daddy-O.” More importantly, the chemistry is real. Adderley’s alto and Davis’ trumpet give the session its easy authority, with Hank Jones, Sam Jones, and Art Blakey completing a lineup that feels compact, precise, and completely unhurried.

The album’s appeal is in how naturally it balances polish and swing. “Autumn Leaves” opens with one of the best-known performances of the tune on record, stretching a standard into something spacious and conversational, while the title track and “One for Daddy-O” lean into blues lines and call-and-response interplay. Even “Love for Sale” sounds refreshed rather than dutiful. This is hard bop with a relaxed centre of gravity: deeply musical, never showy for its own sake, and full of players listening closely to one another.

For this Blue Note Essential Vinyl Series edition, the album returns in the label’s accessible classics line, keeping a cornerstone of the catalogue in print on vinyl without overcomplicating the presentation. If you want a Cannonball entry point, or a Miles-adjacent session that stands comfortably on its own, this is an easy one to recommend.
