Bonnie Tyler’s Faster Than the Speed of Night is a dramatic high point in early-1980s rock, pairing her raspy, hard-edged voice with Jim Steinman’s grand, theatrical writing and production. Issued in 1983, the album turned Tyler into a global pop-rock force, driven by the smash hit Total Eclipse of the Heart and the title track’s larger-than-life sweep. Steinman’s symphonic approach, already proven with Meat Loaf, gave the record a cinematic scale that helped it cross from rock radio to mainstream charts. It remains Tyler’s best-known album and one of the era’s most recognisable power-ballad statements.
