    About this album

BJ4 shows Bob James refining the sleek, accessible fusion style that made him a key figure in 1970s contemporary jazz. Released in 1977, the album balances jazz improvisation with pop-minded melody, shaped by James’s polished keyboard work and clean, studio-focused arrangements. Its appeal lies in that easy blend of sophistication and immediacy, with material such as his reimagining of Pure Imagination and the pastoral Tappan Zee highlighting both his taste for strong themes and his gift for lyrical detail. As part of the Tappan Zee era, BJ4 helped define the smoother side of jazz fusion for a broad audience.
