Bill Withers' Naked & Warm arrived in 1976 as his fifth studio album and his first after the collapse of Sussex, the label that had released his first four records, before he moved to Columbia for the rest of his recording career. That moment of transition matters here: the album keeps Withers' earthy, direct soul songwriting intact, but pushes further into jazz-funk textures and a looser, more exploratory studio sound.
The contrast is part of its appeal. Songs like “Close to Me” and “If I Didn’t Mean You Well” carry the understated groove and melodic clarity people rightly associate with Withers, while “City of the Angels” stretches out into an almost 11-minute cosmic funk workout built from Rhodes, synths, and Dorothy Ashby’s distinctive harp. Session players including Larry “Fatback” Tolbert, Melvin Dunlap, Benorce Blackmon, and Jerry Knight help give the record its smooth, hard-moving feel without crowding the songs.
If some Bill Withers albums are remembered for bigger hits, Naked & Warm stands out as a rewarding side-road in the catalogue: relaxed, slyly modern for its moment, and full of evidence that his songwriting could thrive in richer, more synthetic settings without losing its human touch. This edition also underlines the album’s place in his story, pairing the music with new liner notes by Marcia Withers.
