    Radio City is Big Star’s sharpest and most immediate album, a landmark of power pop built on taut guitars, brief running times and unforgettable hooks. Issued in 1974 after the group’s debut, it emerged from a turbulent period and was largely driven by Alex Chilton, whose writing and performance gave the record its urgent edge. Songs such as September Gurls and Back of a Car became enduring touchstones for later indie and alternative bands, while the album’s blend of melody, bite and emotional unease helped secure Big Star’s reputation as one of rock’s great cult groups.
