Violent Femmes are an American folk punk band from Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The band was formed in 1981 and consists of singer, guitarist and songwriter Gordon Gano, bassist Brian Ritchie, and drummer Victor DeLorenzo.

The band's most successful and well-known album is their 1983 self-titled debut album. The album was certified platinum and produced hit singles like “Blister in the Sun” and “Gone Daddy Gone”. The album received critical acclaim and is often cited as one of the greatest debut albums of all time.

Their follow-up album Hallowed Ground (1984) continued the band's success, featuring songs like “Country Death Song” and “Jesus Walking on the Water”. The album was certified gold.

The band's most commercially successful album is their third album The Blind Leading the Naked (1986). The album was certified platinum and spawned hit singles like “Add It Up” and “American Music”.

Their fourth album 3 (1989) was a commercial disappointment but still featured the hit single “Nightmares”.

The band's subsequent albums have been met with mixed reactions from fans and critics alike.

An interesting fact about the Violent Femmes is that they were the first musical act to perform at the MTV Video Music Awards, performing their song “Blister in the Sun” at the inaugural ceremony in 1984.
